JESUS CHRIST IS GOD (part 16)

Now let us focus our attention upon some of the many prophecies concerning Jesus in the Old Testament, and their fulfilment in the New Testament: “The Books of the Old Testament contain many passages about the Messiah — all prophecies Jesus Christ fulfilled. For instance, the crucifixion of Jesus was foretold in Psalm 22:16-18: ‘For dogs have compassed Me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed Me: they pierced My hands and My feet. I may tell all My bones: they look and stare upon Me. They part My garments among them, and cast lots upon My vesture’ (see also Matt. 27:35). This Messianic prophecy was told approximately 1,000 years before Christ was born, and long before this method of execution was even practiced.

“After Christ's resurrection, preachers of the New Testament church began to declare officially that Jesus was the Messiah by Divine appointment: ‘Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, Whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ’ (Acts 2:36). ‘Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the Gospel of God, (Which He had promised afore by His prophets in the Holy Scriptures,) Concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the Spirit of Holiness, by the resurrection from the dead’ (Rom. 1:1-4).

“Some Bible scholars suggest there are more than 350 prophetic Scriptures completed in the life of Jesus. Circumstances such as His birthplace, lineage, and method of execution were beyond His control and could not have been accidentally or deliberately fulfilled.” Of course, we are talking here of prophecy which is truth revealed before it occurs. The Prophecies concerning Jesus were all a foretelling of what God Almighty had already determined. “In the book ‘Science Speaks’, Peter Stoner and Robert Newman discuss the statistical improbability of one man, whether accidentally or deliberately, fulfilling just eight of the prophecies Jesus fulfilled. The chance of this happening, they say, is 1 in 10 to the power of 17 (a number represented by one followed by 17 zeroes’). Stoner gives an illustration that helps visualize the magnitude of such odds: ‘Suppose that we take 1017 silver dollars and lay them on the face of Texas. They will cover all of the state two feet deep! Now mark one of these silver dollars and stir the whole mass thoroughly, all over the state. Blindfold a man and tell him that he can travel as far as he wishes, but he must pick up one silver dollar and say that this is the right one. What chance would he have of getting the right one? Just the same chance that the prophets would have had of writing these eight prophecies and having them all come true in any one man, from their day to the present time, providing they wrote using their own wisdom. The mathematical improbability of 300, or 44, or even just eight fulfilled prophecies of Jesus stands as evidence to His Messiahship.”

The following is a list of, not 8, or 44, but 355 prophecies concerning Jesus in the Old Testament and the Scriptures which record their complete fulfilment in the New Testament. Following this list we shall concentrate on 44 of these prophecies in greater detail:
